Smart Glasses as Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired

Project type

Solution Development (Software)

Date

March 2023

Location

San Diego

The primary aim of this project was to establish a fundamental framework for smart glasses that cater to the visually impaired. The project involved collaborating with a user in Brazil with 5% vision in his left eye, motivating us to assist him in performing daily tasks safely. The objective was to enhance the quality of life for visually impaired individuals by minimizing hazards through a detection and alert system. While prioritizing safe navigation, there was also research on additional features that would improve accessibility, such as image-to-speech recognition algorithms for identifying signs, books, and other texts. To accomplish these features fully there was a compiled list of sub-goals such as identification of hardware, data collection/AI training, utilizing computer vision algorithms for obstacle detection, and careful documentation of code and datasets.
