Automation and Motion Control Systems

Project type

Motion Control

Date

April 2023

Location

San Diego

As an R&D Engineer at a semiconductor testing solutions company I gained insight on the intricacies of PLC programming, PID motion control, and FPGA motion control. I wrote a register-level PLC scripts that enable SMC linear motors to accurately home and run a custom motion profile. The motion profile would cycle the gantry enabling subsystem troubleshooting and simple reliability testing.

I lead the groundwork for developing an FPGA based motion controller platform. This platform would enabling feedback control of up to 8 independent axes. The high-level control theory diagram is listed below.

Lastly, I was in charge of designing a IO board for a 8 axis pick-and-place handler. This board has 8 SMT analog pressure sensors (for detecting when a part is picked up), 24V/5V power rails, and robust through hole connectors. First prototype was soldered by hand and validated by a DMM.
